Unsure about wood burning stove installation?

Unsure about wood burning stove installation?

Wood burning stoves and multi-fuel stoves can transform any home. Not only are they a cost-effective solution to the problem of soaring gas and electricity bills, they emit fewer carbon pollutants than other energy sources and create a welcoming atmosphere and focal point in the living area.

However, these benefits only come into play when the stove is installed and operated safely and inspected regularly. By installing an inappropriate appliance, failing to ensure the chimney and flue are suitable or failing to check for leaks in the flue, you could be reducing the efficiency of your stove, and more importantly, putting the health and well-being of yourself or your family at risk.

There are many benefits to using a HETAS approved expert when installing your wood burner or multi-fuel stove.

  1. HETAS is an official body recognised by the government to approve domestic heating appliances, fuels and services.

Not only does HETAS have the recognition of regulating authorities, it acts as a quality control body for services and appliances and collaborates with organisations, such as chimney sweeps and manufacturers. This places them in an ideal position to provide reliable advice and recommendations.

  1. An expert with a HETAS certificate has been fully-trained in good practice techniques for installing stoves and flues.

A HETAS approved installer will have both training and experience in installing stoves and flues; they will be able to advise you how your stove should be operated for maximum safety and efficiency.

  1. HETAS will take care of the legal paperwork.

In England and Wales, once your stove has been fitted by a HETAS installer, a certificate will be sent to your local authority for approval. This means you can avoid the expense and bother of paying for a representative of the building control office to come out to your house and check the installation meets regulations. While you may pay a small fee to cover the administration charges incurred by HETAS, this will be less expensive than paying an official from your local authority to approve the installation.

  1. A HETAS approved installer will know what paperwork is required when selling your house.

When you come to sell your house, surveyors and solicitors require paperwork to ensure the installation meets certain standards. If your stove is installed by someone who is not approved by HETAS, they will not be able to provide the certificate which may be required at a later date and may make your property more commercially valuable.

@ James kelly Hi James, Yes, you can install into any caravan - you might just have to make some
changes to the materials around the stove. Thanks, Gr8Fires

@ Janice Evans Hi Janice There are a few different schemes, which are listed:
https://blog.gr8fires.co.uk/2016/02/23/finding-a-competent-person-to-install-your-woodburner/ If
you could remember which scheme your installer belonged to, it should be quite easy to check using
the search functions on each scheme's website. Thanks, Gr8Fires

Hi I had a Log Burner installed 2/3 years ago, our chimney was concreted lined. On the persons
vehicle it said he was a registered fitter but I had no paper work at all from him and now our log
burner has been put out of action, due to the Chimney. He came out to sweep it last year and has
worked Ok until then. This year we had it swept and a month later swept it again but it was sending
the Carbon Dioxide alarm off or smoking out the lounge.. Is there a list of registered names that
I can see within a certain area? Hopefully yours - Jay

@ James Carty Hi James Yes, there are options to achieve the results you want, including
maintaining a secondary boiler (other than the boiler stove) or using a heat accumulator tank (to
maintain the heat generated by your boiler stove even if it isn't lit at 5am). Thanks, Rob

@Janet Aindow Hi, we don't perform installations so you would need to get an installer out for an
accurate quote, but you can use this spreadsheet to give you an approximate guide:

Hi Paul Yes, you should get a certificate:
http://www.hetas.co.uk/consumer/certificate-of-compliance/ This is very important for any future
home insurance claims. Thanks, Gr8Fires.co.uk

Paul Whiteley 2014-01-05 15:23:38
Regarding HETAS installers "taking care of the paperwork". How do I know as acustomer that it has
been done? Should I get a certificate of compliance, or some thing that I can retain as proof that
the stove was installed by a competant person?

GOING OUT THROW THE WALL.BEEN TOLD BY A COMPANY IN NORTHALLETON, THAT THE FIRE NEEDS ONLY TH BE 30CM
AWAY FROM THE WALL. AS THEY WILL PUT A SHEET OF FIBRE BOARD ON THE BACK WALL,? IS THIS LEGAL.

Hi George, Sorry to hear that. Generally, HETAS engineers are genuine, fair and safe. Is it
definitely approved engineers that the bad reports were about? If you're concerned about being
charged over the odds for installation, we can only suggest getting more than one engineer to quote
for the job. Many thanks, Gr8Fires
